The plot of the movie The Day of the Division Commander (movie 1983):
In the fall of 1941, the 78th Infantry Division of Colonel Beloborodov from the Far East arrives at the Western Front and defends on the outskirts of Moscow. For successful actions in the defense of Moscow, the division receives the rank of Guards, and its commander, Colonel Beloborodov - another military rank of Major General.
After several unsuccessful attempts to take Moscow on the move, the enemy was exhausted, his communications were stretched out, and his rear lagged behind. It was obvious that it would not be possible to take Moscow before winter, and Soviet intelligence received reliable evidence of this: the enemy was moving to the defense and holding the already occupied borders.
Not to give the enemy a foothold and move the front line away from Moscow was the goal of the autumn-winter campaign, so, in this favorable situation, the Soviet command decides to conduct a grand counteroffensive by the forces of the Western and Kalinin fronts.
In this counteroffensive, the 78th Infantry Division was assigned the main direction, and the front command reinforces Beloborodov with two tank brigades and one infantry brigade.
On the first day of the offensive the division had to seize the settlements of Snegiri and Rozhdestveno. After a massive artillery preparation on the enemy positions, the infantry went into the attack, but soon the offensive collapsed. All attempts to storm Snegiri and Rozhdestveno head-on, turned out to be heavy losses, and regimental commanders did not want to fulfill the order at any cost.
Then the division commander Beloborodov decides to make a cunning maneuver of forces and means. He orders Colonel Sukhanov's regiment, without getting involved in the fighting, to make a march and go to the river Istra Volokolamskoye highway, which would cut off possible ways of withdrawal of the enemy. It was a risky maneuver, as the division in this case was deprived of the last reserve, but in case of success in the encirclement fell into a large group of the enemy ...
