Narrative:

Action of the film Counterattack unfolds in the autumn of 1943 in Ukraine. The commander of the first Ukrainian Front, Army General Vatutin, carried out a successful operation to liberate Kyiv, but the headquarters of the General Command demands to develop the offensive in the right-bank Ukraine and liberate the city of Zhitomir.

Vatutin asks headquarters not to rush the offensive, since the troops are exhausted and the reserves have fallen behind the Dnieper. But Stalin does not want to hear about defense, only forward to the offensive. Vatutin carries out the headquarters' order and liberates Zhitomir. In the evening, Moscow fires a salute in honor of the liberators of Zhitomir, and the Soviet Information Bureau transmits a joyful message.

But the front commander Vatutin did not share this joy. He understood that this hasty liberation of Zhitomir resulted in huge losses of soldiers' lives, which could have been avoided. In addition, having penetrated the enemy's defense, several Soviet divisions were under threat of encirclement, and if the Germans went on the offensive, there was nothing to help them with: the front reserves were on the other side of the Dnieper, the bridges over which had been blown up.

The commander of the German army group, Field Marshal Manstein, immediately understood the precariousness of the Soviet front and immediately gave the order to attack. He planned to complete the encirclement of the Soviet divisions trapped in the cauldron, cut them off from the main forces and make a tank attack, pushing the Soviet troops back to Kyiv beyond the Dnieper.

For this purpose, on Hitler's personal order, several divisions from Europe come to help Manstein. Having understood the criticality of the situation, Vatutin decides to withdraw troops from the liberated Zhitomir and Brusilov, ordering the front troops to take up a deep defense. Having learned that Vatutin had again given Zhitomir to the Germans, the liberation of which had already been trumpeted throughout the world, Stalin was indignant.

Stalin's deputy, Marshal Zhukov, urgently leaves Moscow for Kyiv. As soon as he crossed the threshold of the front commander's office, Zhukov pounced on him like an enraged hornet. He reported that a conference of the heads of the three great powers on opening a second front was soon to be held in Tehran, and that the Supreme Commander was therefore in a hurry to liberate Ukraine.

After all, if the Allies learn that the Germans are regaining their lost bridgeheads, they will again take a wait-and-see position and will not open a second front. But Vatutin, understanding his personal responsibility, is in no hurry to carry out the order of the headquarters.

He waits for the reserves to arrive, and until then he will hold back the enemy. At night, together with his chief of staff, Vatutin develops a plan for a counteroffensive called the "Zhytomyr-Berdichev Operation." In order for the counterattack to be devastating, it must be carried out where the enemy does not expect it.

To this end, the front's intelligence feeds Manstein disinformation about a counteroffensive being prepared in a completely different place. Manstein takes the bait and transfers divisions to another section of the front, exposing the breakthrough site.

After conducting a powerful artillery preparation, the front troops went on a decisive offensive, liberating Zhitomir and Brusilov for the second time. The liberation of Ukraine was now proceeding at a rapid pace, but when there were 73 kilometers left to the border, on February 29, 1944, on the front road, Army General Vatutin was mortally wounded…
