The action of the movie takes place at the turn of the 50s-60s of the last century in Russia, at the time of active construction of socialism. The movie begins with the arrival of Toni Kislitsyna, a graduate of Simferopol culinary school, to the distant northern "Lespromkhoz" as a cook.

Ilyukha Kovrigin worked as a foreman in this Lespromkhoz. Kovrigin was the front-runner in production and the leader of all socialist competitions. His portrait permanently adorned the honor board in the club, while the portraits of other workers and their bosses were only temporarily on the honor board.

Without noticing it, Kovrigin falls in love with Tonya and they become friends. Seeing that Ilya and Tonya's relationship is becoming more and more intimate, her friends rush to warn her that Ilya is a womanizer and will probably lose with her like with other girls and leave her. But Tonya does not believe her friends and continues to meet with Ilya, and then her friends, girls from the dormitory room had to tell her about the dispute between Ilya and Fili, about which they were told by jealous Anfiska.

After learning about the bet Tonya strongly resented, and as Kovrigin did not prove that he loves her Kislitsyna did not want to forgive her offenses so quickly. The hero of the production had to throw away his pride and himself to run doggy behind a stubborn cook that would finally convince her of his genuine love....
