Having served his enlistment in the border troops, Nikolai Kasatkin returns home. Here he has a beautiful wife and a five-year-old daughter waiting for him. In his plans Nikolai was not going to stay at home, and return to the Far East. The land that he had grown so fond of during his service.

In addition, the Baikal-Amur Mainline, which needed laborers, was being built in the Far East.
