The action of the movie takes place in the early 70s of the last century. The protagonist of the movie is a museum restorer Alexey Burov, a famous collector of icons and weapons, who accidentally becomes the owner of a unique panagia (a small image of the Our Lady(worn by bishops on their chests) of Patriarchs Nikon and Philaret.

When Burov learns about the real historical value of the panagia, and that in 1917 it was stolen from the Patriarchal sacristy, he decides to give it to the state, despite the insistent requests of other collectors to sell it for a lot of money.

But on the day when Burov had to leave on a business trip abroad, the panagia was stolen, and in addition, on the same day from the museum where Alexei worked, was stolen an antique sword of the XVIII century.

As an ardent collector of weapons, Burov is the first to fall under suspicion in the theft of the sword, in addition, he is suspected of staging the theft of the panagia, which he allegedly intended to take abroad. And when on the roof of the house where Burov lived the detectives found the sword stolen from the museum, Burov was immediately arrested.

However, the investigator Georgy Orefiev, contrary to the conviction of all his colleagues, doubts Burov's guilt.
