The film takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia. The famous Odessa chansonnier Georges Bengalsky, also a member of the Bolshevik underground Nikolai Kovalenko, receives a new and dangerous assignment from the party leadership. He must select artists popular in Russia from among the underground members and form a variety theater in Odessa, under the cover of which the underground Bolshevik organization will operate.
At this time, a prominent Bolshevik, Andrei Maksimovich, according to legend, a French timber merchant, Viscount de Cordel, arrives in Odessa on assignment from the Foreign Bureau of the RSDLP. Having come to the Governor-General of Odessa, the Viscount suggests that he create a variety theater in Odessa, which could fill the city treasury well.
The main goal of the theater's creation was to deliver illegal party literature from Europe through the Odessa port under the guise of theater equipment. And the theater, which would go on tour, would deliver this literature to different cities in Russia.
The underground workers from the theatre had to work under the very nose of the chief of the Odessa police, Prince Ivan Bobruisky-Dumbadze, who was a passionate admirer of the dancer Sophie, and very often visited not only the theatre, but also suddenly appeared behind the scenes.
At first, only jealousy for Sophie forced the chief gendarme to keep an eye on the theater artists, but soon he receives information that they are engaged in underground revolutionary activities. Having decided to catch the underground members red-handed, Bobruisky-Dumbadze goes to Petrograd, where the Odessa Variety Theater is soon to come on tour…
