The action of the series takes place in 1965. May 9, Victory Day, on the outskirts of Moscow committed a brutal murder of Petya Yakovlev, nephew of war veteran Sergei Borisovich Yakovlev. The teenager was killed with a point-blank pistol shot: the killer shot him in both eyes.
Shortly before the murder, Petya had a conflict with a neighbor boy Lenya Ponomarev: both were in love with their peer Vika Lopatina. The case could have ended in a fight, if it had not intervened in time Raisa Yakovleva, to whom Petya was an adopted son. Nevertheless, Lenya calls Petya for a conversation at their agreed place by the river, where the latter's corpse was found.
Petya's parents and all the neighbors had no doubt that he was killed by Lenya Ponomarev, but Lenya's father, police captain Ponomarev, did not believe that his son had committed this terrible crime and, in the opinion of the Yakovlevs, defended Lenya. Then Sergei Yakovlev, Pyotr's uncle and adoptive father, wrote a letter to Leonid Brezhnev, the head of state.
Leonid Ilyich took the war veteran's letter to heart, and summons police colonel Fyodor Sablin and his subordinate - MUR investigator Major Ivan Cherkasov. The head of state gives the detectives two weeks to catch the murderer.

But having familiarized himself with the case, Cherkasov strongly doubted its quick completion, unless of course not to make a scapegoat Lenya Ponomarev, and that the guy is a murderer Cherkasov did not believe, although at first he was the main suspect.
Cherkasov could not rest, the way this murder was committed: only a professional could shoot two eyes of a person. And soon Cherkasov learns that this method was used by Antonina Malyshkina, nicknamed "Tonka the machine-gunner".
During the occupation she, collaborating with the Germans, shot more than 1,500 people by her own hand. Back in 1944, as a SMERSH officer, Cherkasov searched for Tonka, but her trail was lost, and soon it became known that the female solder died in one of the camps.
But Cherkasov intuitively felt that the murder was somehow connected with "Tonka the machine-gunner". On this thought Cherkasov was prompted by the biography of Raisa Yakovleva, who by a strange coincidence of circumstances was in the occupied territory, just in those places where this executioner in female form was at work ...
