Mikhail Bagrov, convicted of hooliganism, has escaped from prison. The ZnaToKov investigative group from the Moscow Criminal Investigation Department is searching for the criminal, thanks to whose efforts Bagrov was sent to prison.

The detectives were quite surprised that Bagrov had decided to escape, since he had only been sentenced to two years. Major Tomin, who went to the colony where Bagrov was serving his sentence, found out that the administration had no problems with the convict. He worked well and did not violate the rules, but the convicts reported that shortly before his escape Bagrov had been very depressed about something.

Znamensky established that Bagrov's recent deterioration in mood coincided with the appearance of his fellow countryman Kalishchenko in the colony. It was after a conversation with Kalishchenko that Bagrov decided to escape, for which he now faced a new, more substantial prison term.

Arriving in Elovsk, Bagrov's hometown, Tomin found out that Bagrov had fled the colony because his wife Maya was jealous. In his youth, Maya had been courted by a certain Zagorsky, and even now, despite the fact that she had married Bagrov, he still loved her. Karishchenko knew about this, and when he arrived at the colony, he told Bagrov that while he was in prison, his wife was having an affair with Zagorsky.

Zagorsky was in danger, because the impulsive and arrogant Bagrov, especially in a state of alcoholic intoxication, could easily decide to commit murder, but fortunately Zagorsky went on a business trip for a few days, so the detectives had time to bring Bagrov to his senses...
