The Russian Civil War ended with the victory of the Bolsheviks and Soviet rule was established in the country. However, the economic damage from the war was enormous, and as a consequence, unprecedented famine broke out in many regions of Russia.
The government decides to buy bread abroad, but the world powers were ready to sell bread only for gold. Telephonograms were sent to all the gubernatorial committees VCHK about collecting gold confiscated from landlords and bourgeois and sending it to Moscow.
Chekist Yegor Shilov receives an order from the provincial committee to escort the gold collected in the province to the capital. However, the next day he was found dead with his face mutilated beyond recognition.
It was obvious that the enemies of Soviet power had somehow found out about the shipment of gold. And this meant that there was a traitor in the Cheka or in the gubernatorial committee itself, who had access to secret information.

Taking this into account, the chairman of the provincial committee Vasily Sarychev orders an emergency shipment of gold. This time by an ordinary wagon and without much security.
However, the enemies found out about these plans as well. They attacked the train, overpowered the guards and took possession of the gold.
Meanwhile, the "murdered" Chekist Yegor Shilov is announced in the city. He cannot explain what happened to him, which could not arouse suspicion on the part of his comrades. And then information about Shilov's brother, a Cossack officer who served with the Belykhs, surfaced.
Despite his former merits, Shilov is taken into custody. He faced a harsh sentence, and perhaps even death. But Shilov did not want to die a traitor and an enemy of Soviet power.
Somehow he had to prove his innocence. And how can you do that if they don't believe you? Realizing that he would be put to the wall without any explanation, Shilov escapes and goes in search of gold. Only by returning it, he will be able to regain the trust of his comrades, which for Shilov was more valuable than any gold....
