The film takes place in the late 1930s in one of the suburban summer cottage villages. Timur, a fourteen-year-old nephew of engineer Georgy Garayev, who came to spend the holidays, organizes a pioneer team in the village, which takes patronage over the families of Red Army soldiers who died while performing their military duty.

On the fence of the Red Army soldier's house, the Timurovites draw a star, a sign that means that this house is under their protection. The Timurovites do not advertise their activities, so local residents often take them for hooligans who steal apples from their gardens at night.

Timur and his team, of course, knew that the apples in the gardens were stolen by the so-called ataman Mishka Kvakin and his gang, with whom the Timurites had a conflict over this matter. At first, Timur tries to talk to Kvakin personally and demands that he stop gutting the gardens, especially those with their sign - the red star.

But Kvakin ignored this warning from the pioneer activist and continued stealing apples with his friends. Then Timur, in accordance with all the rules of international law, sends his envoys to Kvakin, who hand the ataman an ultimatum. In the evening they come for an answer, but the Kvakinites seize them and lock them up in a barn.

However, the Timurites had calculated this outcome of events, and, having learned where Kvakin and company would be gutting the garden that night, they would organize an ambush there...
