The action of the movie takes place in the mid-30s of the last century. The main character of the movie is a young guy from the province Anton Kandidov, who works as a loader in a women's strike brigade and, unloading Astrakhan watermelons, dreams that one day his name will be recognized by the whole country.

At that time the designers-footballers of "Hydraer" and "Torpedo" plants, eternal rivals not only in labor but also in sport, were returning from a high-speed run along the Volga River.

Having seen how Anton deftly takes watermelons, which were just thrown at him by his fellow loaders, the designers from "Hydraer" notice the guy's talent as a goalkeeper. And their soccer team just needed a good goalkeeper, because soon there will be a final confrontation with "Torpedo" in the Spartakiade.

So the loader Anton becomes an employee of the experimental design bureau of the plant "Hydraer" and part-time goalkeeper of their soccer team. And soon after Anton played a series of "dry" matches without conceding a single goal, the whole of Moscow started talking about him.

The sudden fame that suddenly fell on the provincial boy turned his head, and he slightly forgot that, first of all, he is a designer, and only then a soccer player. He is reminded of this by his colleagues in the design bureau, who accuse Anton of being unscrupulous about his direct duties.

Offended by the criticism, Anton leaves "Hydraer" and goes to play for their eternal rivals "Torpedo", as part of which, he holds the final match against his former comrades. But the goalkeeper Kandidov could not help Torpedo to defeat "Hydraer", and the latter win the cup without him.

Nevertheless, hydroerovtsy regret that Kandidov left the team, and decide to ask him to come back. Now Anton realized that he was very wrong, because the criticism of comrades was justified and correct, on this, willingly agrees to return to his native team. And soon Kandidov had the honor of defending the gates of the USSR national team and now he is recognized not only by the whole country, but also by the whole world...
