Plot:
60 hours of the Maikop Brigade. That's how much time passed from the moment the brigade entered Grozny with the task of taking the railway station until the moment when the remnants of the defeated brigade left the city.
On the morning of December 31, 1994, two battalions of the Maikop Motorized Rifle Brigade entered Grozny. They were ordered to take control of the railway station located in the city center. Or rather, what was left of it, since the last train had passed through here a month ago, and after the air force had done its job, the railway tracks and buildings were practically destroyed.
At first, nothing foreshadowed trouble. Two columns of the brigade, consisting of motorized rifle battalions, with an interval of 15-20 minutes, reinforced by tanks, calmly entered the city and, as if on parade, proceeded along its deserted streets to the designated place. The first column reached the station without firing a single shot, and it seemed that the worst was already behind us.
But the silence was deceptive. Dudayev's militants, armed with anti-tank grenade launchers, were hiding in the destroyed houses. The second column never reached the station; it was killed immediately. And the first detachment, under the command of the brigade commander, Colonel Savin, was blocked in the station building, surrounded by militants on all sides.
A battle began that lasted 60 hours. Realizing that they could not hold out for long, Savin asked for help, but the detachment sent to support the brigade was ambushed.
Having not received any help, Savin decides to save the rest of the brigade and by the evening of January 2nd he makes a retreat.
700 personnel and 100 units of equipment entered Grozny, and 60 hours later about 200 people and 7 vehicles left Grozny. Other units that entered Grozny that day also suffered such losses. This was the result of this poorly thought-out operation by the top military leadership, who, according to rumors, was in a hurry to present a gift to the Minister of Defense for the New Year, reporting on the capture of Grozny…
