The film takes place in 1941 during the defense of Leningrad. In the center of the story are two fighters, two inseparable friends cheerful and smashing Odessa Arkady Dzyubin and a modest hero from the Urals Sasha Svintsov. In the machine gun squad where the fighters served Arkady was the first number and sometimes from the height of his official position liked to joke about his silent assistant, but he never took offense at his comrade, because they had gone through a lot together.

But one day there was a rift between the friends. As the front line was on the outskirts of Leningrad, one day the soldiers manage to get a leave of absence to the city. Sasha proposes to visit his acquaintance Tasha, in whom, as he later confessed to Arkady, he was deeply in love. Arkady as always by habit decided to joke about his comrade, but this time his humor seemed very inappropriate Svintsov, and he asks the commander to transfer him from Dzyubin.

Shortly afterwards, Sintsov is seriously wounded and is hospitalized for several months. When he is discharged, he goes to Leningrad, where he accidentally meets Tasia. A little offended by the fact that Sintsov did not visit her, she shows him a whole bunch of letters that he wrote her from the hospital. This surprised Sasha a lot, because he knew for sure that he had not written any letters, but when he took the first letter in his hands, he realized that Arkady had written them.

In an impulse of gratitude, Sasha decides to immediately go to his friend and make peace with him, but it turned out to be impossible to do so yet. At that time Arkady, surrounded by the Germans in the DOT, was fighting with superior enemy forces. Having learned that his friend is in mortal danger, Svintsov does not hesitate to rush to his aid....
