The revolutionary events in Russia in 1917-1920 forced Yakov Vosmerkin to leave his homeland and settle in America. However, after learning that it is now possible to get land and farm in Russia, Yakov decides to return.

He receives seeds of Virginia variety tobacco from his American comrade, Charlie, and enthusiastically sets to work, eager to prosper by his own efforts.

Simultaneously with the development of the farming business, a romantic story begins to develop. Yakov begins courting Tatiana, the daughter of retired admiral Katsaurov, whose estate was located not far from the village. However, the road to success turns out to be thorny.

Initial financial difficulties force Yakov to turn to Skorokhodov, a local wealthy peasant, for a loan. Further, an attempt to introduce the new product to his fellow villagers fails. Yakov arranges a kind of presentation, treating everyone to a free cigar, but the peasants, unaccustomed to the principles of market economy, are genuinely perplexed by the offer to buy other cigars for five kopecks apiece.

The situation is aggravated by Skorokhodov's demand for immediate repayment of his debt, who threatened to seize Yakov's gold tooth otherwise. The wealthy peasant confiscates all the unsold tobacco, grinds it and, calling it "American Mahorka", starts selling it for a ruble per hundred gram cup.

The same peasants who earlier resented the price of five kopecks per cigar, now queue up for "American Mahorka" at a ruble with excitement and even fights. Paradoxically, but the fact that a cup holds no more than four or five ground cigars, the total cost of which does not exceed twenty-five kopecks, does not embarrass them at all....
