Plot of the film Godunov (TV series 2018):
The series takes place in the mid-16th century, during the reign of Tsar Ivan the Terrible in Rus'. To strengthen his power, the Tsar creates oprichnina army, which is led by one of his closest associates, Malyuta Skuratov. The oprichniks are given the right to execute and pardon without trial or investigation in the name of the sovereign of Moscow, therefore, everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, is completely possessed by fear…
At this very time, the humble boyar Boris Godunov arrived from Kostroma to Moscow, and thanks to the protection of his uncle, he was enrolled in the oprichnina corps of Malyuta Skuratov.
The warrior's bravery, combined with Godunov's sharp analytical mind, was immediately noticed and appreciated not only by Skuratov, but also by the Tsar, therefore, Godunov did not stay long among the oprichniks, and very soon he became the head of the Bedchamber Prikaz at court.
Having received such a high position in society, Godunov married one of Skuratov's daughters, and his sister married Ivan the Terrible's son, Fyodor.
Having then become Skuratov and brother-in-law of Tsarevich Feodor, Godunov strengthened his position on the Olympus of power even more, and after the death of Ivan the Terrible he became the Head of Government under the new Tsar Feodor Ivanovich.
Due to his relationship with the Tsar, Godunov has a very great influence on him and, in his name, carries out the actual leadership of the state, which many noble nobles did not like.
Of course, they didn’t like the fact that they were being ruled by some lowly serf, but what oppressed the boyars most was that Godunov had cancelled the tax breaks for them that had been introduced by Ivan the Terrible, so they didn’t give up hope of overthrowing the presumptuous upstart…
