Plot of the film Princess Mary (1955 film):
Young officer Grigory Pechorin, exiled to the Caucasus for a duel, meets his old comrade Grushnitsky in Kislovodsk. He immediately initiates Pechorin into the local social affairs. Princess Ligovskaya and her daughter Mary have recently arrived in Kislovodsk.
The young princess was very beautiful, and Grushnitsky did not hide his obvious admiration for her. However, as Grushnitsky explained, the princess looked at the soldier's brotherhood very arrogantly, so that any of them could count on marrying her daughter.
Grushnitsky expected that Pechorin, like him, would admire the princess. However, he only joked indifferently. But in fact, Pechorin became interested in this matter. Seeing how Grushnitsky tries to please the young princess, he decides to get ahead of him.
Soon Pechorin learns that Princess Mary has already heard about his romantic exploits in St. Petersburg and dreams of meeting him sooner. This gives confidence to the young officer, and he begins to act.
Taking the girl away from under his comrade's nose was a bold move. Grushnitsky saw that the princess herself had preferred him to Pechorin, and he could not blame him for anything.
However, such impudence of Pechorin did not please other cadets. And they push Grushnitsky to challenge the impudent fellow to a duel. But in order to kill the upstart for sure, they decided to load Pechorin's pistol with blanks.
Soon after this conspiracy, Grushnitsky insulted Pechorin, and Pechorin, as expected, challenged him to a duel.
Grushnitsky was confident of his victory, but Pechorin learned of a plot against him. He did not expose the conspirators, because he had his own plan for this duel...
