Narrative:

The action of the series Liquidation takes place in 1946, in Odessa. In July 1946, Stalin exiles Marshal Zhukov, nicknamed by the people "Marshal of Victory" in Odessa, to command the Odessa military district.

At that time, Odessa was just beginning to recover from the war, numerous gangs of criminals and fascist survivors armed with captured weapons were still operating in the city. All this seriously undermined security in the city, and as a result, trust in the authorities.

Arriving in Odessa, Zhukov immediately convenes a meeting of the heads of Odessa's law enforcement agencies. He needed to show his work so that Stalin would change his anger to mercy and return the disgraced marshal to his former heights. And for this, Zhukov set himself an ambitious goal: the complete elimination of crime in Odessa.

A few weeks after his arrival in Odessa, Zhukov decides to carry out Operation Masquerade. Thousands of frontline scouts, dressed in civilian clothes, went out into the streets of Odessa at night and simply killed street bandits. But eliminating street crime in this way could cause serious unrest in the city and lead to mass riots.

On the eve of Marshal Zhukov's arrival in Odessa, the head of the Odessa Criminal Investigation Department's anti-banditry department, Lieutenant Colonel David Gotsman, during an investigation of a case, comes across a cache with thousands of sets of military uniforms. Theft of military property is the jurisdiction of the military prosecutor's office, so Gotsman hastened to hand over the case to his colleagues, posting a post of his operatives near the cache.

However, he did not have time to hand over the case: at night, unknown people attacked the post and cleared out the cache. A witness, a street child named Mishka Karas, testified that the attackers were in the uniform of the Red Army, and their leader was a captain. Gotsman was interested in this captain, since several high-profile crimes had occurred in the city under the leadership of this mysterious captain.

Soon Gotsman manages to establish the identity of this captain, it is a certain Chekan, a criminal who before the war was a well-known figure in the thieves' circles of Odessa. From his intelligence sources, Gotsman learned that Chekan "went" under the name "Akademik", whom no one had ever seen or heard anything about.

Then Gotsman decided to dig into Chekan's biography and learned that during the war he had studied at the Abwehr intelligence school. The mysterious "Academician" had also studied there. From the words of one of the school's former graduates, Gotsman realized that the "Academician" had been an extremely valuable agent for the Germans: the Germans had not shown him even to the school's cadets.

The "Academician" case grew like a snowball, the more information the investigation received, the more complicated the case became. The mysterious "Academician" was always ahead of the investigation, as if reading the minds of the operatives, so Gotsman rightly assumed that the "Academician" or his closest assistant worked in the investigation group. Gotsman decided to thoroughly check each of his employees, and when he had already found the trail of the werewolf, he himself was arrested as the "Academician".

After Gotsman's arrest, Zhukov orders the cancellation of Operation Masquerade and large-scale exercises of the Odessa District troops in Moldova. Having learned that the city will be left without cover for several weeks, the real "Academician" decides to carry out an operation to capture Odessa. His men in the forests, whom he armed, were waiting for the signal for active action...
