Plot of the film Liberation: Breakthrough:

The film takes place from the summer of 1943 to the end of 1943. The victory of the Red Army at the Kursk Bulge changed the balance of power in Europe, and Anglo-American troops hastened to land in Sicily.

The Italian army, on which Hitler had never placed much hope, was now completely demoralized.

The soldiers refused to fight and the leaders of the General Staff, seeing the imminent collapse of the state, demanded that the King of Italy immediately give the order to remove from power and arrest Duce, the fascist dictator of Italy. Benito Mussolini.

Upon learning that his friend and loyal ally has been arrested, Hitler becomes furious and sends a special forces unit led by Otto Skorzeny to free the Duce.

Soon Mussolini was already sitting in Hitler’s office, but he was already a man tired of long-term power and war, incapable of governing either the army or the state.

At the same time, on the Eastern Front, the Germans were retreating in all directions. Army Group South, having retreated beyond the Dnieper, was creating a powerful defensive line on the right bank of the river, which, according to the Germans' plan, was to stop the Soviet advance on right-bank Ukraine and further into Europe.

Units of the Red Army, trying to force the Dnieper immediately under heavy enemy fire, suffer huge losses.

Colonel Lukin's rifle regiment, with two battalions, successfully crossed the Dnieper, secured a foothold on the right bank and entered into battle with superior enemy forces, thus creating a bridgehead for the advance of the main forces.

But at the last moment before the introduction of the main forces of the division into the breakthrough, division commander Gromov received an order to redeploy the division to the Lyutezh bridgehead, where the main forces would advance.

Gromov realized that his two battalions were carrying out a diversionary maneuver to draw the enemy’s main forces towards themselves.

Nevertheless, the order was given to the battalions to stand to the end, so that the Germans would not figure out the maneuver and believe that the breakthrough would happen right here.

At the cost of enormous losses, Lukin's battalions fulfilled the command's combat mission. Having used up all their ammunition, the few remaining fighters, under the command of Captain Tsvetaev, broke out of the encirclement; they really wanted to ask their division commander: "Why didn't the main forces of the division come to their aid?"

But the sacrifices of the fighters and commanders of Lukin's battalions were not in vain; during the offensive of their division, Kyiv was liberated, and the Red Army began to liberate right-bank Ukraine.

At this time, the leaders of the three Great Powers, the USSR, the USA and Great Britain, gathered in Tehran. The Allies highly praised the recent victories of the Red Army and finally decided to open a second front in May 1944 in Northern France…
