The film takes place in the seventies of the last century in England. The famous and successful oncologist Roger Mills published his scientific work, promising to soon solve the problems of cancer and was highly appreciated by the Royal Academy of Sciences.
On this occasion, Roger decided to have a little rest in the company of friends on his new yacht "Siren". Among the invited guests were: Roger's young colleague William Garnett, Roger's cousin - Avis Loring and her fiancé Christopher Tarent, the son of a wealthy shipowner from Newcastle Philip Wade with his fiancée Tony Gilmour, and finally, an elderly gentleman - a regular at the club Ian Caple.
In the evening, everyone had a good time, and in the morning, Ian and Avis found Roger dead. He had been shot with his own pistol at point-blank range. Ian gathered all his friends in the cabin and suggested that whoever killed Roger confess to it, and they would report to the police that Roger had committed suicide.
The killer would only be punished by leaving their company forever. But no one present confessed, so William suggested reporting it to the police. Soon, local police sergeant Burrell arrived at the scene.
Having studied the statements of all those present, Berrell concluded that none of them had a 100% alibi, and therefore offered to remain under his supervision until the end of the investigation. Ian suggested that Berrell take them under surveillance at the villa of their mutual friend, where they were actually heading, and the sergeant readily agreed.

Meanwhile, Avis is sounding the alarm, she complains to Ian that the police will probably suspect her most of all. After all, her uncle left Roger a huge fortune, and now with his death she becomes the sole heir. In order to protect Avis, Ian calls his friend, diplomat and lawyer Mr. Finbow to the villa. Finbow is very interested in this case and begins to conduct a parallel investigation.
His suspicion fell on Avis, for whose sake he had been invited. One evening, returning from a walk with Ian, Finbow found Avis by the fireplace, where she was burning her diaries. Meanwhile, Sergeant Burrell suspected Ian, since, according to witnesses, he was the last to see Roger. But Finbow hastened to reassure his friend, since he had arrived on the yacht only the day before the murder, and the killer knew the routine on the yacht well.
Finbow goes through Roger's friends one by one, but cannot identify a possible killer, as none of them have sufficient motives. Finbow goes to London to investigate further.
Here he establishes that Roger was more of a businessman than a doctor and a decent scoundrel.
He presented his scientific works, the works of a young medical scientist William Garnett, in exchange Roger gave William a job in his clinic. Returning from London, Finbow already knew the name of the killer, but Sergeant Burrell, who got the gun from the bottom of the river, declared that it was a fact of suicide. The gun had a weight tied to it, and the killer could have simply thrown it into the water.
Thus, Sergeant Burrell finished the investigation and released all the suspects. But Finbow did not believe that the rich and successful scoundrel Roger could leave this life voluntarily. Since the friends decided to spend one more night at the villa, in the evening they all gathered in the living room to celebrate the case that ended so well for them. But Finbow does not give the killer a chance to remain unpunished ...
