The film takes place in 1953. By this time Joseph Stalin for almost thirty years now he has been at the helm of the largest country in the world called the USSR.
With the help of a powerful repressive apparatus, Stalin had long ago suppressed any dissent in the country, which is why people were afraid to even think badly about Stalin, let alone speak about it out loud.
Stalin was not only the leader of the USSR, he was a great leader and teacher for all Soviet people, who could no longer imagine life without him.
But sooner or later it had to happen. One day, in early March 1953, the leader and teacher of all nations has an attack. Upon learning of this, all his closest comrades - members of the Central Committee, among whom there is no clear leader yet, because Stalin never named his future successor - come to his dacha.
All decisions are still being made collectively. Including whether to call a doctor to the unconscious leader or not? After all, just recently, on Stalin's orders, all the best doctors were locked away in camps because the leader was afraid that they would poison him.
Now there was no one to help him, and the Minister of Internal Affairs Beria had to work hard to find the best of the remaining doctors. But it was too late: Stalin died. Before his death, he regained consciousness for a few minutes, but was unable to point out his successor.
Stalin's death took all his closest associates by surprise, because now they are all supposedly equal, and all have a chance to take the place of the late leader. However, they are all worried about Stalin's lists, in which they appear as accomplices to all of Stalin's lawlessness and crimes against the people.
These lists were taken over by the Minister of Internal Affairs Lavrenty Beria, who with their help could have a significant advantage over other members of the Central Committee and could have any of them arrested at any time...
