The plot of the movie Dog in the Hay (movie 1977):
The movie is set in 17th-18th century Italy. Countess Diana de Bellefleur, a noble beauty, has long been considered one of the most enviable brides in Naples, but until now her heart has remained free. On the hand of the Countess claimed two noble and rich grooms her cousin Count Federico and Marquis Ricardo.
But the Countess was in no hurry to make her choice. And it was not because Diana did not want to offend the other by choosing one of them. It was just that she was secretly in love with her handsome clerk, Teodoro.
Diana realized that her position and status obliged her to seal the bonds of marriage with her equals. She could not, after all, the Countess de Bellefleur, marry an anonymous servant.
She could not even declare her love for him. But she did give some signs to the poor clerk. When Diana learned that Teodoro was having an affair with her maid Marcela, she was furious and ordered the maid to be severely punished.

In general, the Countess behaved like a dog in the hay. She could not be with Teodoro herself, but she would not let others do so either. She made the young man suffer endlessly from hopelessness and unrequited love.
And one day, tired of the Countess's behavior, Teodoro decides to leave her castle forever. There is no telling how this story would have ended if his old friend Tristan had not intervened.
This old rascal was also Diana's servant and was very worried about his mistress. One day he learns that an old count is mourning his son, who has been missing for many years. Tristan manages to convince the Count that his missing son is none other than the Countess de Bellefleur's young clerk, named Teodoro....
