Plot:

Action of the film Last but not least takes place in May 1945, a few days before the end of the war. But the joy of an imminent victory was overshadowed by the fact that a truly second front was unfolding in the war-torn country. While one part of the people was shedding its blood at the front, and the other was forging this very victory in the rear, giving the front its last crust of bread, the country was engulfed in criminal lawlessness.

Taking advantage of the general need and deprivation, various kinds of swindlers and speculators did not disdain to enrich themselves on people's grief, and hardened criminals carried out attacks on warehouses with food and other material values. But the most terrible thing was that far from the front, peaceful people died at the hands of these bandits, because the war reduced the value of human life to almost zero.

An intelligence officer, Senior Lieutenant Alexander Smirnov, who was discharged from the hospital, watches these criminal scumbags live in luxury, spending time in expensive commercial restaurants, and this at a time when his comrades are storming Berlin. Seeing all this, Smirnov thinks about demobilization last of all, because the enemy has not yet been defeated.

Arriving home in Moscow, Smirnov is sent to the criminal investigation department, to the department for combating banditry. But as his new boss explained to him, this is not the front and the methods of work to which Smirnov is accustomed are not suitable here. Criminals, although they have stumbled, are still our citizens and they should not be destroyed, but caught, imprisoned and given a chance to reform.

At that time, the criminal investigation department was searching for a gang that was raiding freight trains at one of the railway stations. As a novice operative, Smirnov was only tasked with observing, collecting information and studying the situation at the local market, where hucksters, swindlers, speculators and other criminal riff-raff were hanging out. But having pre-war experience of communicating with gangster punks, Smirnov managed to gain the trust of hardened criminals and through them get on the trail of the leader of the gang that was engaged in robbery on the railway…
