The film takes place in 1944. The Soviet military intelligence department learns that a gang of criminals, led by Leonid Katkov, nicknamed Kat, is operating under the guise of partisans in the territory of German-occupied Belarus.

This Kat had undergone special training at the German sabotage school "Iron Wolves" and was now recruiting for the Jagdkommando, a special unit to fight partisans. The intelligence leadership decided to kidnap Kat, and for this purpose a group under Major Pavlovsky was sent to the German rear. But since Kat's photo from his personal file was destroyed in a fire, it was decided to send infantry captain Samartsev, who was the head of the special zone in Rostov, where Katkov was serving his sentence, along with the scouts to identify him...
