The film is set in the mid-1980s. War veteran Alexei Fedin approaches investigator Levon Aramovich Dzhangirov and tells him that he buried his front-line comrade Vladimir Melnikov a few days ago. Although Melnikov officially died of a heart attack, Fedin insisted that murder had taken place.

Of course, the killer did not use a gun or a knife; his weapon of crime was an anonymous letter, on which he wrote mountains of anonymous slanderous letters about Melnikov.

For many years Melnikov held the post of director of a construction trust, and just a few years ago he was inundated with a stream of anonymous letters that seriously undermined the director’s health.

After all, a commission came from the headquarters for each such letter, and although most of the anonymous writer’s facts were not confirmed, Melnikov was forced to justify himself, which meant experiencing stress.

Dzhangirov, of course, understood that even if he caught the anonymous person, it would be impossible to prove that he killed Melnikov, but it would be quite possible to prosecute him for slander, especially since Dzhangirov had once encountered slander, from which his father suffered.

Now it was necessary to find out the motives of the anonymous writer, and having understood the motives, it would be possible to identify him. The circle of suspects primarily included those who had claimed to take the post of director instead of Melnikov or those whom Melnikov had fired from the trust in the last few years.

But when the detectives followed the trail, it turned out that the anonymous writer’s motive was much more serious than just revenge or envy…
