The action takes place in the late 80s of the last century in Leningrad. The main character of the film is Alexander Boyarov, a former promising karate athlete, multiple city champion and prize winner of prestigious international competitions.

In 1981, with the start of the campaign to ban karate, Boyarov's coach was sent to prison for five years, and Boyarov himself went underground and began his own coaching career. Then there was military service, Afghanistan, and after the service Boyarov returned to another country.

Now, in the country of victorious socialism, various commercial structures were opening up like mushrooms after the rain, no one was banning karate anymore, and Boyarov’s former colleagues in sports went to serve the newly-minted capitalists.

Boyarov was no exception, getting a job as an administrator and part-time “bouncer” at the commercial café “Palmira”.

“The Tin Soldier,” as Boyarov was called by his owner, the café director Nikolai Petrovich Mezentsev, was quite happy with his new position and fairly high salary.

Boyarov worked honestly and conscientiously for his bread, and being a "bouncer" in a cafe where the main customers were bandits or businessmen with a dubious reputation was very difficult and even dangerous. Boyarov realized this more clearly than ever after the death of a certain Boris Bystrov, an antiques buyer, whose murder someone really wanted to pin on Alexander.

In order to avoid going to jail, Boyarov once again has to go underground to begin his own investigation, because only by finding Bystrov's real killer could he save his life...
