The film takes place between 1912 and 1921. When young Don Cossack Grigory Melekhov went to war in the summer of 1914, he did not think that this war would last for the rest of his life.

In the First World War, Grishka Melekhov fought bravely, rising to the rank of officer and earning a whole gallery of medals on his chest. But here, he also understood the value of human life, and that a soldier is not an executioner. Killing armed enemies is one thing, but killing an unarmed person or one who surrenders is quite another.

In 1917, first the February and then the October revolutions take place in Russia. The situation at the front has changed: the Bolsheviks are agitating soldiers to leave the war and build a new happy life in freedom, equality and brotherhood.

Many soldiers, tired of the long and hopeless war, buy into these calls, leaving the front en masse and going over to the side of the Bolshevik squads. Grigory Melekhov also believed the Bolsheviks, but soon he sees the light and sees that instead of the peace promised by the Bolsheviks, another war awaited them – a merciless and fratricidal one.

Tired of war, and not wanting to fight against his Cossack brothers who were on the other side of the barricades, Grigory returns home to the Tatar farmstead of the Veshenskaya village, hoping to stay away from this bloody slaughter. But Russia was ablaze, brother was going against brother, son against father, yesterday's friends were becoming fierce enemies.

Most of the free Don Cossacks did not want to accept this new Soviet government, which threatened to take their land and divide it among everyone. In order to protect their land, uprisings against the commissars break out all over the Don, and Grigory and his brother Peter lead Cossack hundreds.

As in the First World War, Grigori is one of the few who does not kill his current enemies for no reason, but releases them after capturing them, hoping that they will come to their senses. But the released commissars again took up arms, and with even greater ferocity fight against yesterday's brothers, godfathers, friends.

Soon Grigory's brother Pyotr Melekhov, who was surrounded with his detachment, also died at their hands. Having promised the Cossacks their lives in the event of their voluntary surrender, the commissars treacherously deceived them and shot them immediately after their capture.

From that moment on, something broke in Grigory Melekhov's soul. If earlier he had called for mercy for captured commissars, now he demanded that his subordinates not take Bolsheviks prisoner. Grigory, who had hoped to sit out the war, succeeds in it and becomes a division commander.

But there is no joy in Grigoriy's soul from victories and ranks in a war in which some Russians are killing other Russians. He understands that it is necessary to urgently stop the fratricidal war, and for this it is necessary to reconcile with the Reds, but how, if so much blood has been spilled on both sides?
