Plot:

Action of the film Heritage of the Republic takes place during the civil war. Soviet power requisitions cultural values, which until recently were the collection of Prince Tikhvinsky. Now all this has become the property of the republic and, by order of the Council of People's Commissars, was transferred to the Petrograd Museum of Arts.

But when the boxes delivered to the museum were opened in Petrograd, no valuables were found in them. A criminal case was opened on the fact of theft of national property, but the investigation reached a dead end, without finding those guilty of the theft, and the case was soon closed.

Moreover, the civil war had not yet ended, and the Soviet authorities had not yet gotten around to searching for the missing valuables, which could well have already been sent outside the republic.

But two years later, in Petrograd, hooligans were detained who tried to take a painting from a random passerby, which turned out to be from the missing Tikhvinsky collection.

The investigation into this case was reopened and assigned to the recently demobilized Red Army soldier Makar Ovchinnikov.

At this time, the former manager of the Tikhvinsky house, Ilya Spiridonovich Tarakanov, who, with the help of a certain “Marquis,” the prince’s former fencing teacher, makes plans to transport his collection abroad…
