Plot:

The action of the film "Burnt by the Sun 2 Citadel» разворачивается в  1943 году. Арсентьев разыскивает Котова в самом пекле сражения. Штрафбат Котова по прихоти пьяного генерала Мележко готовился атаковать в лоб укрепленный вражеский район — «Цитадель». Увидев Митю, Котов до сигнала о начале наступления, бросился в атаку, увлекая за собой массы бойцов. Митя вынужден был броситься за Котовым под шквальный огонь немцев.

After the battle, Mitya arrests Kotov for beating General Melezhko, who sent hundreds of soldiers into a useless meat grinder. Having arrested Kotov, Mitya personally transports him to Moscow, but suddenly stops the car near the landing. He removes Kotov's handcuffs and orders him to go to the forest. Here in the forest, Mitya tells Kotov the whole truth about his family. How he deceived Marusya and Nadya all these years, claiming that Kotov was shot.

After this, Mitya gives Kotov a pistol, hoping that he will deservedly punish him. But Kotov did not shoot Mitya, and when they returned to the car together, Mitya gave Kotov his tablet, in which Kotov saw the shoulder straps of a lieutenant general, his military awards and his party card.

Soon Kotov will be appointed division commander instead of the demoted General Melezhko, the same division in which he served as a penal battalion. Comrade Stalin himself gave Kotov instructions before his departure to the front. Kotov is given a combat mission with a strong political overtone, after which either his chest is covered in crosses, or his head is in the bushes. Kotov's division must take that same "Citadel", but not with the forces of battle-hardened Red Army soldiers, but with inexperienced militiamen who had been sitting in the rear until then...
