The film takes place in Spain in the 17th century. The most noble hidalgo of Spain, Don Cesar de Bazan, Count de Garofa, after long wanderings around the world returns to Madrid.
Once the count was the heir to a large fortune, but now he was left with only the honor of a nobleman and a sword, which he was ready to use at any moment to defend justice.
But at that time, the Spanish King Charles II banned duels, and the violator faced execution. The exception was Holy Week, when the duelist was not executed, but simply hanged.
These harsh laws could not stop the noble hidalgo, and he stood up for the boy before the musketeers, wounding the musketeer captain himself in a duel.
But for breaking the law, Don Cesar de Bazan was arrested and sentenced to hang. Unexpectedly, the first minister Don José de Santarém himself comes to his aid, offering the Count a small deal.
He is ready to ask the king to replace the gallows with execution for the Count, and in exchange for this the Count must marry a woman whose face poor Don Cesar will never be destined to see.
Don Cesar de Bazan readily agrees, since it is not right for a nobleman to be hanged like a dog. However, he could not be shot either: the brother of the boy saved by the count loaded the musketeers' guns with blank bullets.
Having received such a gift, Don Cesar de Bazan wants to leave Spain quickly, but learns that the woman he married before his execution is unusually beautiful, and the Count falls in love with her at first sight.
And he also learns that this whole cunning combination with his execution and marriage was planned in advance by the first minister for his own selfish purposes...
