The plot of the movie Retired Goat Drummer:
Gavrila Stepanovich Chuprun worked in a variety of fields: he was a volleyball coach, a salesman, a hairdresser, an event organizer in a kindergarten, and a plumber in a housing and maintenance office.
However, he never managed to find his true calling. His family lacks support: the son is ashamed of his father and his professions, and his wife constantly reproaches him: "You slacker, how many jobs have you had already? You will soon be fifty, and you still haven't decided on a career."
In search of a new beginning, Gavrila decides to return to his native village of Dyadkino to his mother, but before leaving, he asks his neighbor, a retired sailor, for the uniform of a 3rd rank captain of the river fleet.
His return to the village in a captain's uniform makes a strong impression on the locals. The local police officer offers him to hold a conversation with the youth about the realities of life. A young and attractive gypsy girl, Nastya, falls in love with Gavrila.
Meanwhile, a telegram arrives at the village council that plumber Chuprun has been fired for absenteeism. The villagers gather at Gavrila's to find out the circumstances. In response to their questions, Gavrila opens up, admitting that he is not the captain.
However, the sudden appearance of Chuprun's wife changes the situation: she supports her husband, claiming that he is indeed the captain and is expected on the ship. This allows Gavrila to avoid disgrace and save face in the eyes of his fellow villagers...
