Narrative:

The action of the film "Hard to be a God" takes place in the distant and bright future for planet Earth. Finally, on Earth, people have learned to live in peace and harmony, they have stopped waging bloody wars, prisons have disappeared and borders have been abolished. The unprecedented growth of scientific and technological progress has allowed humanity to go out into the vastness of the universe, to search for other civilizations.

The object of scientists' attention is one of the planets where a humanoid civilization existed, very similar to the earthly civilization. However, in terms of development, this civilization was significantly behind the earthly one, and resembled the era of the late Middle Ages. Here, as on Earth in the Middle Ages, people worshiped one god, and those who spoke on behalf of this god had a monopoly on power.

In the name of God, they persecuted not only free-thinking people: scientists, poets, artists, but even those who could write and read. Scientists from Earth were very interested in this civilization, because studying the processes that took place here helped to understand what happened on Earth itself many thousands of years ago, and therefore take measures to prevent the earthly civilization from sliding back into medieval barbarism and obscurantism.

To study this extraterrestrial civilization, a special agent Anton was introduced into the state of Anakar, acting under the guise of a local aristocrat, Rumata Estorsky. Anton was only supposed to observe, record information, and in no case interfere with the natural course of history.

However, the blatant injustice and tyranny of the powers that be in Anakara force Anton to disobey the order and take the side of the oppressed peasants in the fight against their enslavers.
