Plot of the film In August 44th (2001 film):
The film takes place on the territory of liberated Belarus. Deep in the rear of the Soviet troops, the front counterintelligence detected an enemy radio station with the call sign "KAO". The head of the front counterintelligence department (SMERSH), Lieutenant General Yegorov, reports this to the main counterintelligence department. And immediately receives an order to find and neutralize the enemy agents.
The difficulty of the task was that the saboteurs were communicating from the forest, and each time from different points. Yegorov sent the encrypted messages intercepted by the radio operators to Moscow for decryption, and in the meantime he gave his scouts the task of looking for any clues that could quickly lead to the enemy.
The presence of enemy agents deep in the Soviet rear threatened to disrupt the implementation of a major strategic offensive operation to destroy the half-million-strong Wehrmacht group in the Baltics, therefore, the capture of saboteurs was taken under control by Headquarters and personally by Comrade Stalin. The Supreme Commander is dissatisfied with the work of counterintelligence and gives the People's Commissar of State Security 24 hours to catch the agents.
But Yegorov understands that a military operation will lead to the physical destruction of the saboteurs. And risking his life, he tries to gain time to catch them, because with their help it will be possible to uncover the entire agent network in this area. However, the high leadership of the People's Commissariat of State Security, remembering Stalin's instructions, was adamant.
Meanwhile, Alekhine and his group set up an ambush at the place where the saboteurs were hiding the radio station. When the forward patrol reported that the saboteurs were approaching the ambush site, the captain received a radio signal from Yegorov to immediately leave the forest and stop searching. However, Alekhine ignores the order, because he is sure that the decisive moment for capturing the saboteurs has arrived...
